  • Description

Vintage WWII women's Civil Defense driver summer uniform jacket.

    MEASUREMENTS (approximate):
    Bust - 38 1/2"
    Waist - 30"
    Length - 27"
Sleeve (shoulder seam to end of cuff) - 22"

This is the summer outdoor uniform made of light blue cotton denim called "defense blue." There is driver patch for New York and a rank stripe on the sleeve. The label in the neck is Arnold Constable Fifth Avenue.

The jacket is in fair condition and has some staining and fading. There are rust stains on the front top pocket and on the back. There is some other lighter staining on the sleeves, epaulet, pockets and back. Small hole near the end of one sleeve. General overall fade. There are sewn in shoulder pads. The buttons are held in place by safety pins (to clean the jacket, the buttons MUST be removed of they will rust and stain the uniform). A few loose threads.

This is a rare uniform to find. In fact, it is the only only I have ever seen (besides in photos) in all of my years of collecting.

To volunteer to work for Civil Defense, women had to be between the ages of 18 and 50, attend a 24 hour first aid course, have the equivalent of a high school education and serve without pay.
