Original, one of a kind, field made tunic made from one of the rare brown zeltbahn. This is a sort of generic cut with an elastic waist which I actually prefer to the ones which were just copies of existing tunic patterns. This shows a jacket truly made for the man that was going to wear it, made the way he wanted it. It uses mostly the original steinnuss buttons from the zelt, but one of the buttons is broken. The cuff buttons are just generic period buttons. There is a shadow of stitching where there used to be an eagle and there are some spots on the shoulders where there were some loops for shoulder boards which are now missing. There are no buttons for boards but I am sure they were there at one time. There is a small repair on the right sleeve. There are some runs of stitching seams from where the zeltbahn was taken apart. There are a few small holes that look like normal zelt wear, like one under the armpit. Most of the damage is in inconspicuous locations. The jacket displays well and I actually had it on a mannequin for several years. A unique piece in a class of its own that you will not find in any other collection.
These field made tunics were fairly popular but still rather uncommon and similar creations appear in many original photos. Unfortunately the zelt that this one was made from would probably have been worth more intact as it is one of the rarest variants with the all brown side. The exact reasoning and issuance behind the brown zelt is still unknown but they all seem to trace back to the same maker L. L. G. der Segelmacher, Berlin and were made from around 1938 to 1942-43ish.
