Original box for the R.A.44 - a simplified late war German mortar sight. As the name implies, it went into production in 1944 so very few were made compared with the R.A.35 and other variants. The box is marked POS. I found a small quantity of these all are in similar condition, the ones pictured are a fair representation of the rest. The price is for 1 box.
These are very interesting for anyone interested in late war variations for one big reason. This is the original paint. This hideous green was the factory color. The inside is painted a slightly more normal green. I am confident in saying the awful color on the outside is correct, because it is clearly the only paint that has ever been on them, and the closures are still painted black and were not over painted. I also have seen a number of things painted in similar colors that were original. I believe these probably never left the factory and were probably being put together in the last few days or weeks before the factory was over run. I had a box from the same factory that was stenciled, but I don't think the outside was even painted but the inside was the same green as these. So I am guessing the factory ran out of paint at some point and just started making do.
