Egyptian cigarettes became very fashionable as a luxury cigarette in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were in such high demand that many counterfeit companies appeared, offering cheaper and lower quality tobacco and using brand names and packaging meant to evoke Egyptian themes (the most notable being Camel). Egyptian tobacco popularity declined a bit after WWI, but the industry continued until it was nationalized by the Egyptian government in 1952.
