  • Description

Vintage colorful striped miser's purse from Germany.  Meant to be worn on the wrist. It has a center slit opening with sliding rings. The rings are moved to the side to insert coins an then pushed down to secure them. One side is more rounded and has a tassel - the idea being that certain types of coins go in each end and, if it was dark out, you could tell what coins were on each end by feel. It is in good condition overall (coin in the photos not included).

Miser’s purse is a term that dates to the turn of the twentieth century, near the end of the purse’s popularity. It was inspired by the purse’s design, which made it very difficult to retrieve its contents. They had mostly lost popularity after WWI, however this particular purse looks to be around 1930s era.

The video below is a demonstration on how to use a miser's purse from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution.
