• German Armband for Blind Person

  • Description

Interesting armband worn by a blind person which appears to be pre war or war time. You do sometimes see these in use in original pictures and I believe also in some original films showing life in various German cities. The armband has been taken in to make it smaller at some point. It appears to be well worn, but still in decent condition. There is a stamp but it is partly under the folded over area where it was taken in. The symbol of the 3 black dots on a yellow background is still used in Germany today. This armband was first introduced for safety reasons after WWI when many war blind people returned home. This helped to prevent accidents by alerting vehicles and cyclists.

The photo (taken by Evgeniĭ Khaldeĭ) of two elderly men, one wearing the armband signifying blindness, the other his helper, sitting on a crate amid the rubble is from Berlin 1945.
