This is a new made replacement gas system plug for the M1 Garand. It is noticeably different in that it has only one slot like a flat head rather than two like a Phillips. Even if you do have what you believe to be an all war time M1 you probably still have a postwar gas plug as nearly every rifle was updated with the Phillips style plug.
