Striped summer weight uniform. Cadet nurse patch on one sleeve. Insignia pins on the label (these pins are almost always missing). Pins are marked Sterling Blackinton. Fairly good condition, but it does have some issues. There are some rust stains on the collar and on the skirt. Pink smudge by the buttons. a few light stains. The zipper on the skirt has some oxidation, but still works. The skirt has been taken in a bit at the waist.
The buttons are held in place by safety pins. The buttons must be removed to clean the jacket or they will rust and stain the jacket. The jacket was given a quick wash but not stain treated. The epaulets should also be removed for cleaning and normally have a small stitch in the center to keep them in place.
A little about the Cadet Nurse program: To recruit as many women as possible, the requirements for joining were not set high. Women between the ages of 17 and 35 with high school education and in good health could apply. Marriage as a student was permitted. Cadet nurses received federal funds for tuition, board, room and uniforms (indoor and outdoor) in addition to a regular monthly allowance. Many cadet nurses later became army or navy nurses.
