Period German map board. Typically used for artillery plotting or by officers. It is a nice wooden frame with an aluminum plate. This one is missing the sheet of clear plastic to allow you to put in a map and use grease pencil. You can probably find something to replace that fairly easily. This one has 2 eyelets to attach a carrying strap. The exact age of this one is unclear but it seems older, perhaps early post war at newest.
These are interesting. I have found one or two that I know were Wehrmacht used, I have also found similar ones that were postwar and used to hold menus at restaurants and I know there is a slightly more modern version still used by archeologists.
