Repro Straw Mattress HU 1939
Its time to ditch your cot for the more comfortable and authentic reenactment sleeping experience. All pads are marked 1939 with and HU and an eagle. These reproduction straw mattress pads really are more comfortable than a cot and are made to accommodate a 6 foot tall reenactor with a little room to spare. They measure about 88"-89" long and 42"-43" wide (greatcoat pictured for size comparison). Once stuffed those dimensions will shrink a bit depending on how full you like it! This pad would have been issued to men in fixed fighting positions like bunkers, etc... It is an appropriate field-usable piece. All you need is one of these pads and some straw to stuff it. The opening is on the side and is 11" long.
The mattresses should be machine washable on cold (it is still better to lightly hand wash them) DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DRYER! YOU MUST HANG THEM UP TO DRY! These will shrink a lot if you do dry them in a machine (they shrink about 10 inches!). The markings may fade in the wash.
This batch of reproductions is a little different from our last ones! There are some variations between this reproduction and the original we have on hand but this one does match some that we have photos of (see original photo). On these, the opening is on the side. These are made from very nice linen Herringbone twill whereas the originals were made from a plain weave linen. Still, all in all, this is a nice pad made from nice material with the correct markings. The markings vary slightly - some printed darker than others (see photo).
We have our markings pictured next to the original pad in our collection in the last photo, so you can compare (the original is dated 1936, ours are dated 1939).
