Vintage Kgl. Hofbräuhaus München half liter beer krug with lid made by Martin Pauson. This krug was produced sometime between 1884 and 1918. The abbreviation "Kgl." stands for königlich, which represents royal ownership; that dates this krug to 1918 or earlier since the monarchy was overthrown after WWI. After WWI, the company became state owned (staatlich) and "Staatl." replaced "Kgl."
The pewter attachments are marked M Pauson for Martin Pauson. He opened his business in November 1884 in Munich. He took out an advertisement in 1888 at the 3rd International Art Exposition that specifically mentions the Kgl. Hofbräuhaus krug. Martin Pauson died in October 1934 and his wife's brother Hugo Aufseesser took over the company. On July 23 1938, they were forced to sell the business. It was advertised in the newspaper that as of July 25 1938, the firm of Martin Pauson was now German and operated by Fritz Haertle.. Allied bombing in 1945 destroyed the shop.
It is in good condition with some light wear. The inside is fairly clean.
This is a krug, not a stein. Stein is what English speakers and tourists say. In German a stein is a stone, and is not used to describe a beverage container.
