Original hand carved wooden bread plate made in an SS workshop. Although every plate was slightly different from the next, many do follow a typical theme or pattern. This one has the expected font and the phrase Heil dem gast der zu uns kommt or hail the guest that comes to us. This is a phrase from the Norse Edda script and common for various hand crafted SS workshop items like these plates. This one has some wear in the finish on the high points. It is in fairly good stabile condition without any cracking. A fairly hard to come by piece. This one does not have any markings, but it matches several other examples so closely that it likely was made by the same hands.
We have been picking up these very gemutlich looking older German bread plates for a while as they really do fit the aesthetic of the era and some plates have phrases which feel very Third Reich, this was one of those plates and after a little additional research it turned out to be quite a bit more Third Reich than we expected. We often joke about there being some designer responsible for everything fitting a specific aesthetic, items like this makes that feel a lot less like a joke.
